Sharply rising material costs and the lightweight construction of fuel-saving vehicles call for a reduction in costs as well as the weight added through the armouring. Given the security situation worldwide, this stands in contrast to the opposing need to raise the protective performance of vehicles in withstanding the threats posed by weapons and explosives.
The permanent need to overcome these challenges makes the further development of ballistic materials and their production and joining processes unavoidable. To support this development process, Welp Armouring operates its own firing range with integrated test lab. As owners and operators of an accredited firing-range facility, we are also authorized to test and certify our customers’ products.

The following equipment is available for developing and testing existing materials:
Production of samples
- Buehler PowerMet 3000 cutter
- Buehler Simplimet 1000, automatic mounting press
- Buehler Alpha automatic grinder and polisher
Measurement of hardness
A transportable Rockwell hardness tester for testing – in compliance with the relevant standards – test pieces that are heavy and difficult to transport.
Bareiss V test for HV 0.1 to HV 10, incl. evaluation software for Vickers, Brinell and Rockwell tests, incl. hardness traverse tests.
A Neophot 2 incident light microscope and a Zeiss Metaval are available to perform structural tests.
For testing bending stiffness, especially where crash-relevant materials are concerned.
The drop hammer can be fitted with weights of between 64.5 to 111 kg and can drop from a maximum height of 2m.
